Martin Jerome Smith Martin Jerome Smith, aged 84, formerly of Silver Spring, MD, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2013 at his home in Middletown, MD, surrounded by family and friends. Beloved husband for more than 60 years of the late Nellie Bloxom Smith; devoted and patient father of Lisa Suzanne Smith and Denise Julienne Kominski; loving father-in-law of Timothy B. Jago and Mark S. Kominski and proud grandfather of Alana Nicole Kominski and Rachel Erin Kominski. He is survived by his brother Thomas Garner Smith of Rockville, MD and his sister Noel Smith Reilly of Alexandria, VA. He is predeceased by his brothers Terence Joseph Smith, David F.X. Smith and Kevin Patrick Smith. Born July 20, 1929 in Minneapolis, MN, he was the oldest son of the late Martin Francis Smith and the late Virginia Garner Smith. Following graduation from American University in Washington, DC he had a 30 year career with the U.S. Department of Defense. After he retired, he worked for 15 years as a volunteer guide at Antietam National Battlefield. An avid gardener, he also was active in local historic preservation efforts with the Central Maryland Heritage League, including the restoration of the Dahlgren Chapel on South Mountain. Friends will be received on Sunday August 18, 2013 from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Keeney &Basford Funeral Home 106 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701-5405. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday August 19, 2013 at 1:00 PM at the Holy Family Catholic Community Church, 7321 Burkittsville Road, Middletown, MD 21769. Interment will follow at the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick, MD.
