Virgil Luther Kefauver

Mr. Virgil Luther Kefauver, 88, of Myersville, Md., died Friday, October 11, 2013, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was born on April 27, 1925, in Middletown, Md. He was the son of the late John Daniel Kefauver and Mary Florence (Lutz) Kefauver. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Frances (Carmack) Kefauver on February 21, 2002. They were married on December 1, 1951. Virgil graduated from Middletown High School in 1943 and entered into the US Navy to serve during World War II. In pursuing a career in the US Navy, he served on US Aircraft Carriers, Guided Missile Carriers, Amphibious Ships, Ocean Minesweepers and an Escort Patrol Craft. He also served as a Senior Enlisted Instructor in the Seamanship and Navigation Department at Luce Hall, US Naval Academy. Virgil's service awards included the Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 4 batlle stars, World War II Victory Medal, Naval Occupation Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Phillippine Republic Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, Phillippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 battle star and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Ending his naval career in 1968, he was employed as a Service Associate Systems Engineer for Combat Systems and C3I at Hughes Aircraft Company, Fullerton, CA. He was also employed as a Senior Staff member at Advanced Technology, Reston, VA. Surviving are two daughters, Brenda L. Beck and husband Gregory of Yorba Linda, CA and Patrice L. Kefauver of Frederick, Md, and two grandsons, Justin Beck and Kyle Beck of Yorba Linda, CA. He will also be remembered by a favorite niece, Betty Armstrong of La Plata, Md. and his best friend and canine companion, Joey Boy. He was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Daniel Kefauver and two sisters, Olive MacKenzie and Marietta Schultz, two step brothers, Richard Kefauver and Henry Kefauver and two step sisters Mary and Mildred. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm, on Friday, October 18, 2013, at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick, Md 21701. Funeral services will be held at 10:00AM, on Saturday, October 19, 2013, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel, at the funeral home. Father Gordon De La Vars will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be shared to Frederick County Animal Control, in memory of Virgil Kefauver, 1832 Rosemont Avenue, Frederick, MD 21702.
