Mr. Harry Richard "Jim" Deater, 78, of Frederick, died on Friday, November 22, 2013, at the College View Center. He was the loving husband of the late Mary Frances (Merridy) Smith Deater, who died on June 12, 2013. Born in Frederick on August 7, 1935 he was the son of the late Harry G. and Elizabeth Bowers Deater. Jim proudly served his country in the 29th Division of the United States Army. During his life he had worked at Ox Fiber Brush Company, Bechtel Corporation and was retired from the Minute Man Press. Jim was a former member of Calvary United Methodist Church where he and his wife worked with the MYF youth groups for many years. They took the youth on many trips, to the Fun Factory in Baltimore, visited the Gettysburg Battle Fields. They also spent time with the youth at their cabin on the Monocacy River, West River Church Camp and Charlottesville, Va. They also enjoyed hosting many Halloween parties. Later they joined the Thurmont United Methodist Church and had attended Fairview Chapel in New Market. Jim was an avid Redskins fan and New York Yankees fan. He and his wife participated in a bowling league for over two decades. They both shared an interest in history, especially the war between the states. Jim also had many books on the Civil War. Surviving him are sisters-in-law, Shirley Favorite and husband Morris, Bobbie Main-Rosen and husband, BD, Jean Silvers and husband Scotty, Nancy McCartney, and brother-in-law, Donald S. Elliott, Sr., many nieces and nephews, including his care giver and niece, Karen Disque. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Deater Householder. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, November 26, 2013, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Dr. Raymond T. Moreland, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Cresap's Rifles Post 78, 29th Division Association, P. O. Box, 1882, Frederick, MD 21702.
