Velyen Jeanne Vaughn, "Jeanne", 87, of Braddock Heights, MD, passed away on January 9, 2014. Jeanne was the wife of Robert E. Vaughn, married for more than 62 years. Born on February 23, 1926 in Harrisburg, PA, Jeanne is the daughter of Vance M. Eberts and Evelyn M. Schuller Eberts. She graduated from John Harris High School in Harrisburg, PA and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Shippensburg State University, Shippensburg. PA. Being the consummate student, Jeanne received her Masters of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Maryland College Park and pursued her doctoral work in Chemistry and Education at the University of Maryland.She also studied at Brown University in Providence RI and the Argon Institute in Chicago, IL. Jeanne had a passion for the sciences believing that a scientific education and self-improvement were the pathways to an intellectually fulfilling life. She felt everyone deserved a chance to learn and taught a broad range of subjects but focused primarily on Chemistry and Physics at Frederick High School from 1951 to 1954 and Chemistry at Governor Thomas Johnson High School from 1966 to 1988. Her extraordinary devotion to her students was only surpassed by her ability to challenge them to set high expectations, strive for excellence and not settle for an easier path through life. Jeanne drew great satisfaction from helping others succeed. She was well known by her students as one who cared deeply about their future, working countless hours with clubs and activities before and after school so that each and making sure every student had opportunity. Beyond teaching, she was very active in her profession, attending scientific conferences and traveling to Ireland, China and Brazil as an active member of the International Chemistry Society and the National Science Foundation. She was a National Evaluator for the National Science Teachers Association- NASA Space Shuttle Student Involvement Program. Every outing was an adventure to learn. As an avidavid outdoors person, Jeanne spenther free time with her family exploring, camping and hiking in National Parks and Forests across the United States. Her wide variety of hobbies of birding to quilting matched her inquisitive mind and she found solace as a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Frederick, MD. She is survived by her husband Robert E. Vaughn, two sons and their wives, Steven Douglas Vaughn and wife, Alice of Thurmont, MD and Bradley Vance Vaughn and wife, Karen, of Chapel Hill, NC, two grandsons Robert William Vaughn and Christopher Elliot Vaughn both of Thurmont, MD andthree granddaughters, Heather Vaughn Anderson of Herndon, VA, Courtney Michelle Vaughn and Jennifer Jeanne Vaughn both of Chapel Hill, NC as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her brother, Warren E. Eberts and a niece Diane R. Eberts, both of Harrisburg, PA. Friends will be received from 12pm to 1pm, on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701. A service celebrating Jeanne's life will immediately follow at 1:00 PM. Pastor Suerdieck will officiate. Interment will be private for family members at Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider contributing to the V.
