Mr. Willard "Bill" Leon Brown, Sr., age 89, a lifetime resident of Jefferson, passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2014 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the devoted husband of nearly 62 years of Doris Eileen (Stull) Brown. Born on December 2, 1924 in Jefferson he was the son of the late Chester Wright and Evelyn Catherine (Rice) Brown. Mr. Brown was a life long member of the Jefferson United Methodist Church. Throughout his life he enjoyed the apple butter fundraisers for the church. He was an active member of the Jefferson Ruritan Club, attending many events such as the yearly carnival. He was also a member of the Brunswick Moose Lodge 1582, a charter member of the Junior Order of America, and the United Steel Workers of America. Early in his life he worked on his family's dairy farm until 1961. He worked various jobs before accepting a position at East Alcoa in 1970 working there until his retirement in 1987. In his retirement he enjoyed repairing small engines. He met many new people and friends by fixing there lawn mowers. When he wasn't working, he was a great hunter and fisherman, and mushroom hunter, and enjoyed trips to Ocean City where he enjoyed using his metal detector. He loved sitting on his front porch waving to people passing by his home. Mr. Brown was the father of Willard "Billy" Brown, Jr. and wife Maryann of Martinsburg, WV and Catherine E. Smith and husband Wayne of Jefferson; the grandfather of Brett Allen Brown and wife Paula of Sharpsburg, Crystal Nicole Smith and friend Kevin of Glen Burnie, Bradley Wayne Smith and friend Janine of Jefferson, and Billie Jo McTighe and husband Patrick of Hagerstown; the great-grandfather of Hannah Elizabeth Brown and Brenna Noel McTighe and expecting his first great-grandson in April, Camden Preston. He is also survived by his sister Constance Linton of Frederick, his sister-in-laws Margaret Angleberger and Betty Wolf, step-father-in-law David Michael of Frederick, brother-in-law Edward Smith of Jefferson and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Brown is preceded in death by his mother-in-law Altie Elizabeth Michael. Friends will be received on Thursday, February 6, 2014 from 5-9 PM at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick where services will be held in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home on Friday, February 7, 2014 at 11 AM. Rev. Paul Papp of the Jefferson United Methodist Church will officiate. The interment will follow in the Jefferson Lutheran Church Cemetery, Jefferson.
