Mrs. Carolann Wiles Hooton, 70, of Thurmont, passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the loving wife of 50 years, to Michael L. "Hooter" Hooton. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, on December 1, 1943, she was a daughter of the late Richard G. "Ace" and Eileen Hann Wiles. She attended high school at Frederick High School graduating in 1961. She went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree at American University and holds a Master's Degree in Political Science from Hood College. She had 35 years of service for the National Institute of Health and the US Food and Drug Administration. She retired as the Director of the Freedom of Information Staff in Federal Drug Administration's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. Together with her husband, Michael, Carolann was an enthusiastic traveler. Their travels included 8 visits to Egypt and several visits to Greece, the Greek Islands,Turkey, Syria, Jordan, the Holy Land, and the Galapagos Islands. She was an avid reader and in 2013 she established the Carolann Hooton Research and Reading Library in her husband's boyhood hometown of Rowlesburg, WV. Over the past several years Carolann and Michael have spent a great deal of time in Rowlesburg and were very active in the revitalization efforts to rebuild the town following a devastating flood of the Cheat River in 1985 Carolann is survived by her loving husband and her devoted sister, Cynthia Wiles Motter and husband Jack Motter of Ft. Myers, FL, nephew Ian Motter, his wife Jennifer and their sons Zachary and Avery of Frederick, two aunts, Barbara (Tillie) Salt and husband Don, Sadie Hoy and husband Marvin, three cousins, Terri Zigler, Nancy Nicely and Chris Turner. She will be fondly remembered by Michael's family Lelia and Pam Hooton, Patricia Horney and Lelia Loffelman, and friends Michael and Sally Crist, Donald Stevens, and friends and colleagues of Rowlesburg, WV. She was preceded in death by a cousin, Vicky McDonald, and two uncles, Jack Wiles and Jake Wiles. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Frederick Memorial Hospital Hospice Care Center, the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, and all Carolann's family and friends for their assistance, service and thoughtful prayers. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m., on Sunday, March 16, 2014, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. A Christian Wake service will be held at 4:30 p.m., on Sunday, at the funeral home. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, March 17, 2014, at Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 118 East Second Street, Frederick.
