Charlotte Emma Poffenberger

Mrs. Charlotte Emma Eckelt Poffenberger, 90, of Frederick, Maryland, passed away on June 19, 2014 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. The wife of the late Charles Orville Poffenberger, she had been a resident of Somerford Place in Frederick for 11 years. Born July 6, 1923 in Essex, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Carl P. and Charlotte Flick Eckelt. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker for many years. She enjoyed cooking, sketching and painting. She returned to school in 1985 at the Germantown campus of Montgomery County Community College, where she earned an associate's degree in General Education Humanities. She was the 1986 editor of the campus arts and literary magazine, the "Gryphon." She enjoyed freelance writing for both the school paper and several local newspapers. Charlotte was a long standing member of the Maryland Federation of Republican Women and the Montgomery County Republican Women's Club, where she served in numerous offices for well over a decade. Charlotte is survived by two daughters: Phyllis H. Poffenberger and husband Robert R. Yanka Sr., and Linda J. Finnerty and husband Edward M.; five grandchildren: Daniel E. Johnston, Tamara J. Ramirez, John B. Finnerty, Heath A. Johnston and Michelle L. Finnerty; three great-grandchildren: Nicholas R. Johnston, Victoria E. Forrest, and Alexus D. Johnston; and two sisters: June C. Eckelt and Hildegarde L. DeSousa. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Carl W. Eckelt and a sister, Elizabeth E. Williams. A celebration of life will be held for Mrs. Poffenberger in the fall. Information will follow.
