Mr. Mantz Kenneth Michael, also known as "Bubby" and "Mike" of Frederick, passed away on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at his residence. He was born in Frederick on October 24, 1923, to the late M. Elizabeth Titlow Michael and the late Mantz I. Michael. He was the husband of Grace J. Tregoning Michael who died March 22, 2009. Mr. Michael quit high school and joined the US Navy in October, 1941, where he served aboard the battleship USS New York and the heavy cruiser USS Quincy. While aboard the Quincy, Mr. Michael had many memorable experiences. The Quincy transported President Franklin D. Roosevelt to and from the Crimean Conference where FDR met with Churchill and Stalin. On D-Day, during the invasion of Normandy, the Quincy shelled the shore without taking any hits and later sailed to Italy to help bring about the surrender there. After re crossing the Atlantic, the Quincy sailed through the Panama Canal to Japan where Mr. Michael and his shipmates landed and took part in the surrender at Tokyo Bay. Japanese soldiers approached the wary sailors bowing and surrendering their guns and swords. Mr. Michael was honorably discharged in 1947. Mr. Michael worked at a number of jobs, mostly with the Federal government including at Bethesda Naval Hospital, Fort Detrick and the National Bureau of Standards. In his work with boilers at the NBS, he invented a device to keep the boilers from running dry. His ability working with his hands carried over to his private life where he spent many hours doing wood working, repairing electrical equipment, fixing friends' and neighbors' roofs, plumbing, furnaces and just about anything else he was asked to do. He was truly someone who could be counted on. Surviving is a daughter, Vicky Lynne Gloyd of Frederick, a daughter Sarah Ann Brabham and husband Henry of Goodview, Virginia, a granddaughter Brandy Lynne Gloyd-Shaikh and husband Ali of Brooklyn, NY, and son-in-law, Jack Ashcraft of Florida.
