John Leland Bryan

He was the husband of Sarah B. Bryan, who preceded him. He was born on November 15, 1926 in Washington, D.C. He was the founding Professor and Chair of the Department of Fire Protection Engineering at the University of Maryland from the Department's initiation in 1956 until 1993. Following his retirement on August 1, 1993 he was Professor Emeritus of the Department with 37 years of service in the Department and 39 years of service with the University. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Oklahoma State University and a D.Ed. degree from American University. He was a member of the National Fire Protection Association since 1948. He served as Chair of the Board of Directors, the Standards Council, and the Fire Safety Education Memorial Fund Committee. He was a long time member of the Means of Egress Technical Committee of The Life Safety Code. He received the National Fire Protection Association's Paul C. Lamb Award and The Standards Medal. He was a member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers since 1950, and he was a fellow since 1989. He was a founding member of the Chesapeake Chapter. He received the Fire Protection Person of the Year Award in 1977 and the Arthur B. Guise Medal in 1998. The John L. Bryan Mentor Award was created in his honor in 2007. In 2013 he received The President's Award. He served on the Board of Trustees for Underwriters Laboratories from 1977-2000. He was a Life Member of the College Park, MD Volunteer Fire Department. He previously served on the Stillwater, OK; Chevy Chase, MD; and Glen Echo, MD Fire Departments and the Bethesda Chevy Chase, MD Rescue Squad. He was a member of the Maryland State Firemen's Association Hall of Fame and the author of two textbooks and numerous articles in professional publications. Surviving are one son Steven L. Bryan of Tokyo, Japan; one daughter Joan M. Bryan, husband Tim Sheldon and two grandchildren, Kelsey Sarah Sheldon and Andrew Bryan Sheldon, of Cincinnati, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded by two brothers Howard Y. Bryan of Washington, D.C. and Robert W. Bryan of Glen Allen, VA and two sisters Betty J. Stephens of Mobile, AL and Helen M. Timberlake of Evans, GA. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5pm Sunday, November 16th at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick, MD. Funeral Services will begin at 10:00am on Monday, November 17th at Calvary United Methodist Church, 131 West 2nd Street, Frederick, MD 21701. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
