Aletha D. Swisher left this world on October 26, 2014, to join her first husband, Luther W. Shryock, and her second husband, William E. Swisher, in God's heavenly kingdom. Born on April 14, 1925, Aletha, known by loved ones as "Meamie," and "TaTa," was predeceased by her mother Nora Viola Shaw. She is survived by her devoted daughter Carolyn Eichelberger-Storm of Middletown and her beloved granddaughter Terri Eichelberger Heredia of Virginia Beach, VA. Surviving also are sisters Norma R. Shryock (Wakeman T. Shryock) of Hagerstown and Patricia G. Thompson of Oldtown, MD; brother Robert T. Shaw (Beatrice Shaw) of Oldtown; brother-in-law Harry J. Shryock (Barbara Shryock) of Oldtown; sisters-in-law Martha Riley (Dale Riley) of Cumberland, MD, Garland M. Athey (William Athey) of Cumberland, Evelyn Apple (Garry Apple) of Oldtown, Barbara Swope, Jane Hollenshead and Linda Swisher all of Mercersburg, PA. Aletha was predeceased by brothers-in-law Robert Thompson, Raymond Swope, Nyle Hollenshead and Robert Swisher. The family would like to recognize special friends: Donna Astlin, long time good friend; Christine "Tina" Goumpers, friend and caregiver; Scott Fagen, friend and gardening "buddy" and Gail Lawrence, friend and neighbor. Aletha enjoyed planning and working in her beautiful gardens and writing about her life in the poetic form. She was devoted to her family and welcomed all loyal friends, for whom she cooked some great meals and desserts. She traveled and lived in much of the US, enjoying its' diversity and regional charm, but claimed Maryland, and especially Western Maryland, as her home. Mrs. Swisher's viewing will be held on Friday, October 31, 2014 from 10-11 AM at Pleasant View Church of the Brethren, 6213 Picnic Woods Road in Jefferson, MD 21755-9613. (at the corner of Rt. 17 and Picnic Woods Road) where a service will be held at 11 AM. A second viewing will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2014 from 10-11 AM at the Glendale Church of the Brethren, 2180 Flintstone Cheek Road, N.E.,Flintstone, MD where a service will be held at 11 AM. Rev. Timothy S. May Sr. will officiate both services. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Pleasant View Church of the Brethren to the above address.
