Mr. Charles (Bucky) Edward Hargett, Sr., 87, of Mt. Airy, passed away on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He is proceeded in death by both of his wives, Elsie Irveline Crouse Hargett (married 43 years) formerly of Frederick and Regina Elizabeth Crouse Wetzel Hargett (married 22 years) of Mt. Airy. Born on April 27, 1927 in Feagaville, MD he was the son of the late Mary Catherine Hargett Zimmerman. Mr. Hargett graduated from Frederick High School in the class of 1944. He served in World War II in the European Theater with the 92nd Air Repair Squadron and the 44th Air Depot being stationed in Germany/France from June of 1945 until October of 1946. In addition to his honorable discharge, he was also awarded the World War II Victory Ribbon and Army Occupation Medal. Following his time serving in the armed forces, Mr. Hargett entered the work force spending 20 years in classified research at Fort Detrick. After Detrick, he relocated to Baltimore in 1960 and he worked with new building construction with Penniman and Browne Construction and Schaefer and Sons Construction both of Baltimore and The Carnegie Institute. He later worked at Bowie State University as Director of Facilities for new construction, finally retiring in 2001. Just prior to his retirement, he relocated back to Frederick County from Bowie, MD. In his retirement, he continued his education, achieving his Bachelors of Arts from Shaftesbury University in 2001 and his Masters of Business Administration in 2003. He also completed numerous courses at UMBC and Towson University. He even obtained his pilot's license after returning from the war. Mr. Hargett was a lifetime member of the American Legion, the Aircraft Owners and Pilot Association and a member of the Frederick Civil Air Patrol for many years following his military service. In his free time, he enjoyed home improvement projects, school and scout projects with his children and grandchildren, traveling and was an avid reader. He had a strong passion for Science, Astronomy and Military History, especially WWII. Mr. Hargett is survived by his four children, Sharan Lee Hargett Bidle and husband Arthur Kay, Linda Lou Hargett Freund and husband Rodney, Charles E. Hargett, Jr. and wife Justine and Jerry Allen Hargett and wife Eileen, 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren (with one on the way). He is also survived by three step children (one deceased), many step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and one brother Luther Franklin Hargett of Jefferson. He is preceded in death by one half-sister, Catherine May Zimmerman and two half-brothers, James Zimmerman and Robert Zimmerman, one step-son, Douglas Kent Wetzel and one step grandson, David Wayne Lee Jr. The family will receive friends from 2-4 & 6-8 PM on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. The funeral service will be held at 1 PM on Sunday December 7th at the funeral home. Interment will be private in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
