Mr. Ralph Carner Leatherman, 93, of Frederick, passed away on Tuesday, December 16, 2014, at Somerford Place in Frederick. He was the husband of the late Irene Hargett Leatherman, they were married for 66 years. Born in Antioch, West Virginia on June 30, 1921, he was a son of the late Minor Elsworth and Mary Hardy Leatherman. Ralph was a military man having enlisted in the US Army during WW II and served with the 31st Infantry (Dixie) Division. He was in the Pacific Theater and during his time in New Guinea, he received the Bronze Star for meritorious service. He retired in 1980 from Fort Detrick where he had worked in the Transportation Department. He loved poetry, traveling and spent many hours walking on the C & O Canal. His family would like to extend a loving thank you to the staff and care givers at Somerford and also Hospice for their care to him. Surviving are many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and great great nieces and nephews. He was the last of his immediate family. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., on Friday, December 19, 2014, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Franklin Bishop, will officiate. Interment will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
