Susan Rosenstock Nolan

September 15, 1931 — January 21, 2015

Susan Rosenstock Holly Nolan passed away at her home on January 21, 2015 from cancer after a courageous journey of 19 years of treating the disease. Susan was surrounded by her family at the time of her death. Susan and her twin were born on September 15, 1931 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Her twin, Janet Rosenstock Greenwald, preceded her in death in 2008. The daughter of Benjamin Rosenstock and Edna Cahn Rosenstock, Susan lived in Frederick most of her life. Susan's father was a prominent lawyer in the community. She attended Frederick High School and graduated from National Cathedral School. She then graduated from Goucher College where she received her degree in economics. Her grandfather, Frank B. Cahn, the owner of an investment brokerage firm in Baltimore and a seat holder on the New York Stock Exchange, did not approve of his granddaughter taking a position in the financial career field, so she instead took a role in Baltimore County Social Services as a social worker. Susan was extremely proud of being a "true Fredericktonian" and was devoted to helping her community. She served on many local boards such as: the Salvation Army and Planned Parenthood of Frederick. She also had a great interest and passion for both national and local politics. She was unwavering in her commitment to the Democratic Party. In 1978 she was elected to the Frederick Central Committee, ran for Frederick County Commissioner in 1982 and was a founding member of the United Democrats of Frederick County. Susan also had a successful career working in real estate and received many national awards as a top producer. She left real estate as a result of her second relapse with the cancer. Susan was a lifelong learner and a veracious reader. She took graduate classes at Hood College and attended many programs at Frederick Community College up until just a few months before her death. She was active in the Torch Club and was a founder of the Frederick Book Club. She read the New York Times daily and was always interested in discussing current events. Susan also had a deep love of classical music, having studied and taught piano from her home for many years. Susan is survived by her husband Edward Nolan. In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children: John Holly of Frederick; Ben Holly and his wife Julia of Fairfax, Virginia; Ruth Holly Fenton and her husband Jim of West Chester, Ohio; and Thomas Holly and his wife Camille (Paige) of Ellicott City. Susan was proud of her six grandchildren: Erin Fenton, Megan Fenton, Abby Fenton, Melissa Holly, Emma Holly and Margot Holly. A memorial celebration will be held on Saturday, January 24th at 10:30am at St. Joseph - on Carrollton Manor in Frederick. During a recent doctor visit to the Frederick Cancer Treatment Center, Susan talked about the increase in patients in the current facility since her original diagnosis. She was very excited about the hospital building a new facility for cancer care. She requested that if at the time of her death, donations are made, they be in her name to support the new Frederick Memorial Hospital Cancer Institute. Arrangements are with the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick.
