Richard N. Grove, Sr., 94, of Jefferson, Maryland, peacefully passed away on March 6, 2015. Richard was born in Jefferson at his parent's home on March 5, 1921. He was the son of Greenberry F. Grove and Mamie Heffner. On the death of his parents Richard went to live with Keefer (Pete) and Edna Crampton, also of Jefferson. Richard attended Jefferson Elementary School and often spoke of his times in Mrs. Thelma Arnold's classroom. Richard entered the Army on February 3, 1942. He was a lineman that erected and serviced communication lines in combat areas. He with assigned to Company "A" 437th Signal Heavy Construction United States Army Battalion. He was honorably discharged on September 19, 1945. He was very proud to have served his country during WWII. Richard was married to Betty Remsberg Grove on April 20, 1946. They were married for over 53 years. Richard was employed at Potomac Edison, The Everedy Company and then Fort Detrick as an electrician for 39 years. He retired July 29, 1983. Richard was a charter member of the Jefferson Ruritan. He held several offices both at the local and district levels. Richard was granted "Ruritan Forever" on May 15, 2013. Richard also belonged to the Jefferson Fire Company. He was a faithful member of the Jefferson United Church of Christ. He was a deacon and acolyte chair for many years. Richard and Betty loved to travel especially with Doris and David. Richard was proud to share that he had visited all 50 states except 5. Traveling to his Army reunions was always a special event for him. He was an avid wood worker and especially enjoyed his wood shop after he retired. Richard enjoyed watching the events on Lander Road from his recliner and picture window. His lunches at Tresie's and visits to HC Summers were highlights of his day in his later years. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, his beloved children Donna Grove, Thomas Grove, and Richard N. Grove, Jr. and two brothers Charles Grove and Harold Grove. He is survived by his daughter-in-law Melody Grove; granddaughter Emily Davis and husband Andrew; as well as great granddaughters Elise and Lily Davis. Richard also leaves behind a sister Edna Huffer; sister-in law and brother-in law Doris and David Ifert, and sister-in-law Barbara Gwinn. Several nieces and nephews, as well as many good friends are also left to mourn his loss. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Jefferson United Church of Christ. The family will receive friends on Monday, March 9 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Jefferson United Church of Christ, 3837 Jefferson Pike, Jefferson, MD 21755. Funeral services will be held at the church on Tuesday, March 10 at 11:00 AM with visitation an hour prior to service time. Interment will be in Jefferson Reformed Cemetery, Jefferson.
