Adelaide Dutil Mcgovern

October 12, 1919 — April 12, 2015

Adelaide Dutil McGovern, 95, of Frederick, Maryland, passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2015 at Homewood of Frederick. She was the wife of the late William Robert McGovern. Born on October 12, 1919 in Manhattan, New York. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Gertrude Braden Dutil. Adelaide was a devoted Administrative Secretary at the Walter Reed Institute of Nursing until her retirement. Concurrently, she was also a very dedicated and awarded Coordinator for the Handicap program which assisted special needs children of uniformed armed services members to learn how to bowl and swim. She also volunteered several years of her time to the Army Community Services and Our Lady Star of the Sea School (Solomon's Island, MD), where she was a member of the church. As an ardent mother of five, she faced many obstacles while raising her son who suffered from Down's Syndrome. With her determination and against all professional advice at the time, she taught her son to walk and to participate in daily activities leading him to live a fulfilled and productive life. In her quiet time, she enjoyed sitting down and reading a good book. Surviving her are two daughters, Barbara Ann McGovern and husband Robert Uebel, and Elizabeth Ann (McGovern) Simpkins and husband Charles; and son Peter Joseph McGovern and wife Olivia; son-in-law Dr. Milton April; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Adelaide was preceded in death by her daughter, Catherine M. April and son William Michael McGovern. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Deacon Mike Currans will celebrate. Interment will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery with her husband and son. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the ARC of Frederick County, 620-A Research Drive, Frederick, Maryland 21703.
