Joseph Benjamin Long

Mr. Joseph Benjamin Long, 96, life long resident of Jefferson, passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2015, at the Kline Hospice House. He was the husband of the late Dorothy Rice Long, who died May 24, 1998. They had been married for 55 years. Born in Jefferson at the family farm known as Long Lan Farm on April 14, 1919, he was a son of the late Joseph I. and Verna Johnson Long. Joe was a farmer for most of his life working on the family farm in Jefferson, and for many years was in the livestock business and attended sales with his friend, Doty Remsburg. Mr. Joe was a life long member of the Jefferson United Methodist Church, 65 years as a member of the Jefferson Grange, chartered member of the Jefferson Ruritan Club and a long time member of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics, Jefferson Council No 127. He was an avid Orioles fan. Surviving are his nephews, William Long, Jr., and wife Kathy and Charles Long, niece, Susann Jones and husband, Dave, and great nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his long time friends, Robert Hooper and the Arnold family. He was preceded in death by his brother, William Long, Sr. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., on Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Thursday, June 11, 2015, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. James Ridout, pastor of the Jefferson United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in the Jefferson United Methodist Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Jefferson United Methodist Church, 3882 Jefferson Pike Jefferson, MD 21755 or to the Scholarship Fund of the Jefferson Ruritan Club, 4603 B Lander Road, Jefferson, MD 21755.
