Carol Jo Browning

Carol Jo Phillips Browning, devoted wife of J. Maurice Browning, lost a fight of nearly 2 years duration against an insidious killer - cancer - at the Washington Hospital Center, July 12, 2015. Born in Frederick, Maryland on September 13, 1946, Carol was the youngest child of the late Carroll D. Phillips and Loretto Smith Phillips. She was raised in Brunswick, Maryland and was a 1964 graduate of Brunswick High School. After graduation, Carol worked at the National Institutes of Health. After caring for a young and growing family she worked for the Mt. Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor, Maine and for the Deaconess Hospital in Billings, Montana. In 1994, she left Deaconess and started a new career working for the Montana Highway Patrol. Upon returning to Maryland in 2002, she was hired by the Maryland State Police as a dispatcher; first at the Westminster Barrack and later at the Rockville Barrack. In 2009, she was promoted to Dispatch Supervisor in Rockville and retired from that position on April 1, 2013. Besides her husband of 44 years, Carol is survived by three sons, James III and wife Lisa of Lavina, Montana, Jonathan C. Browning and wife Maura of Jefferson City, Missouri and William B. Browning of Frederick. In addition, she has 4 grandchildren: Katie, Michael and A.J. Browning of Lavina, Montana and Margaux E. Browning of Jefferson City, Missouri. In addition she is survived by three sisters, Rita J. Delawter of Mt. Pleasant, MD, Mary F. McNelis of Berlin, MD and Loretta E. Lurz of Baltimore and a large and caring extend family. Carol was preceded in death by a daughter, Leslie Carol Browning and by two brothers, Silas Phillips and Robert Phillips. Carol will be fondly remembered by a friend of 64 years, Ms. Ann B. Smallwood of Brunswick, and special friends, Mr. and Mrs. John B. Aalgaard of Billings, Montana, AeSook Alsmeyer of Frederick, Missy Gilliam of Frederick Anita E. Goade of Sharpsburg, and her uncle. Earle L. Browning of Mt. Airy. Friends may call at the Kenney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick, MD from 7-9 p.m. on Friday evening, July 17, 2015. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, July 18 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Timothy Catholic Church, 8651 Biggs Ford Road, Walkersville, MD 21793. Burial will be in the St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, 1125 St. Michael's Road, Mount Airy, MD 21771-3299. Following the burial, a light lunch will be served by the Funeral Ministry of St. Timothy in the Parish Center. Carol was not a flower person. In honoring her preference, it is requested that more lasting tributes to her memory be made in the form of memorial contributions to St. Timothy Catholic Church or to a charity of your choice.
