Walter Joseph O'Neil

September 24, 1920 — August 2, 2015

Mr. Walter Joseph O'Neil, age 94 of Frederick, MD passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2015 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville, MD. He was the husband of the late Mildred Berner O'Neil who passed away on September 16, 2006. Born on September 24, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY he was the son of the late Walter Joseph O'Neil, Sr. and Mary Frances (Byrne) O'Neil. Mr. O'Neil served in the United States Army Air Force in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Red Raiders, the 5th Air Force 22nd bomb group. Following his military service, he was a longtime employee of the United States Post Office. Following his retirement he was active in AARP in Glendale, NY, enjoyed woodworking and was a master gardener. After moving to Frederick, he became actively involved with the association activities at Crestwood Village. Mr. O'Neil is survived by his daughter, Diane Arcieri and husband William of Rockville, and three grandchildren, Alicia Cohen, Kenneth Arcieri and Jennifer O'Neil. He was preceded in death by his son Martin Walter O'Neil and his sister, Marilyn Sargent. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 PM on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick where a prayer service will be held at 8 PM. The interment will be held on Friday, August 7, 2015 at the Cypress Hills Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY. Contributions may be made in Mr. O'Neil's name to the Alzheimer's Association, 108 Byte Dr # 103, Frederick, MD 21702.
