Jack Gilson Smith

Jack Glison Smith of Frederick, MD was reunited with his late wife and youngest son in God's care on August 10th, 2015. Jack was the oldest son of the late Sarah Glisan Smith and Henry Nusbaum Smith and born November 2nd, 1927 in Mt. Airy, MD. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Madeline Buhrman Smith and son Douglas William Smith. For most of Jack's life he was employed as a civil servant having worked for the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) and the Department of Energy (DOE) before retiring in 1985. Jack graduated from Mt. Airy High School in 1944, worked in the local A&P store for a short time before joining the U.S. Merchant Marines in 1945. In 1953 Jack married the love of his life, Madeline (Peg) Buhrman. From 1954 until 1956 he served as 1st Lieutenant and Gunnery Officer aboard an LST as the Amphibious Operator in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed his family, sports, camping, hiking and traveling. He was a member and past councilman of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Frederick. Jack is survived by his two children, Randolph Glison Smith and wife Sally, Shelley Smith Miller and husband Dennis, three sisters Hypacia Smith Selby and husband Howard, Mary Smith Molesworth and husband Robert, Anne Smith Van Sant and husband Donald, grandkids Kenneth, Daniel and Ryan Smith and Kristen and John Skogsberg, many nieces and nephews, pet Browney, all of which combine to create a wonderful extended family. Jack was twice-blessed by enjoying the opportunity to experience the past five years of his life with his special friend and companion Margret C. Boyer. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., on Wednesday, August 12, 2015, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. A celebration of his life will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, August 13, 2015, from the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1415 West Seventh Street, Frederick. Interment will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Woodsboro. In lieu of flowers Jack has requested to please consider making a donation to a charity of one's choice.
