Maureen Margaret Burke Atwood

August 25, 1933 — October 21, 2015

Maureen Margaret (Burke) Atwood, 82, of Frederick, Maryland, passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at her home. She was the wife of the late Alan K. Atwood. Born on August 25, 1933 she was the daughter of the late James John "JJ" and Mary Agnes (Donovan) Burke. She graduated Newman Catholic Central High School in Sterling Illinois in 1951. She earned a B.S.N. from St. Ambrose College of Nursing in Davenport Iowa in 1954. Maureen worked as a nurse in various hospitals after graduation. She left the nursing profession to care for her growing family. Upon the death of her husband in 1974, she began a very successful career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. She served in various capacities at several federal correctional facilities until her retirement as Warden at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut in 1994. Maureen was an avid walker, reader, history buff and weather watcher. She travelled frequently making many trips with various family members. She enjoyed the company of her friends, was a regular bridge player and volunteered for 12 years at The Old Stone House. She had two loyal dogs, Taylor and Nellie, which she adored despite their well know idiosyncrasies. Her grandchildren always looked forward to her visits as she enjoyed playing Kings-in-the-Corner, Sorry, Spades, Dominoes and numerous other games. Perhaps the activity she seemed to enjoy most was spending time talking, listening and laughing with her family. She is survived by her children, Michele Mensing, Michael Atwood, Gail Atwood, James Atwood, Stephen Atwood, Jamie Qualls, Christopher Atwood and Mary Custer; daughter in law, Preilla; grandchildren, Peter Holmes, Jeffery Mensing, Rebecca Mensing, Benjamin Atwood, Joel Atwood, Mark Atwood, Rachel Atwood, Brandi White, Heather White, Kara Atwood, Krista Atwood, Stephen Atwood, Mary Ann Atwood, Michael Atwood, Alan Atwood, Chad Atwood, Chelsey Atwood, Windsor Reach, Jacob Qualls, Corey Qualls, Sarah Qualls, Independence Atwood, Kelsey Custer, Trevor Blanchard, Myah Francisco and Addalyne Negas; 15 great grandchildren; siblings, Edward Burke, James Burke and Jo Anne Guthrie. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded by her son, Jeffrey Atwood and brother, Donald Burke. The family will receive friends from 1-2pm on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St. The funeral service will be held at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, a non-profit agency that brought much support and guidance to Maureen and her family, PO Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.
