James Murphy

Mr. James Jefferson Murphy, 93, of New Market, died Thursday, October 22, 2015, at Kline Hospice House, Mt. Airy. He took his last breaths surrounded by his family Born March 4, 1922, in Covington, KY, he was the son of the late Charles Edward and Viola Edith (Haggard) Murphy. He is pre-deceased by his older brother Charles Henry and his wife, Ruth. As a teenager, he loved acting in school plays and getting into mischief with his friends, many of whom left to fight and die in World War II. Of his many jobs, his favorite was as a buyer at Rinks Department Stores. He went on to own a small manufacturing company, embellishing towels. James was an avid tennis player well into his 70s. He had a passion for travel, visiting 17 countries in his lifetime. The highlight of his travel was a solo month long trip to Mexico, a 70th birthday gift from his family. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Bethany Murphy and their daughter Stephanie Murphy and husband Paul Grambsch, and their children Carter Grambsch, Gabrielle Grambsch, and Jack Grambsch. In addition James is survived by his children from his marriage to Billie Murphy, James J. Murphy II and wife Susan, Charlene Meinecke and husband Charles, grandchildren, Sean Murphy, Charles Murphy and wife Kristen, David Meinecke and wife Nichelle Thompson, Jeffrey Meinecke, and great-grandchildren, Justin Thompson-Jamar, Helen Arencibia, Jacob Meinecke and Nicholas Meinecke, He was a doting father and grandfather who felt blessed to have a loving family. The family will receive friends from 1-3pm on Saturday, November 7th, 2015 at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick, Maryland 21701.
