Mary peacefully passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2015 with family by her side. Born in Toledo on October 26, 1950, Mary was the first of four daughters born to John and Elizabeth Sackett.
Mary graduated from Notre Dame Academy in 1968 before going on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida, where she would meet the love of her life and husband of 41 years, Tom Hammond.
After getting married in 1974, Tom and Mary moved to Frederick, Maryland, where she began her professional career as an elementary school teacher. Following the birth of their first son, Chris, Tom and Mary relocated back to Toledo to be close to her parents and her three sisters, Sharon, Pam and Kathy. Upon returning to Toledo, Mary spent a number of years teaching 3 rd grade at St. Pius X Elementary School. While she loved teaching, the only thing that meant more to Mary than her students was her family which is why, after the birth of her second and third sons, Tony and Nick, she decided to sacrifice the career she loved in order to devote her life to her children.
When she wasn’t attending her sons’ countless sporting events or other school activities, Mary devoted the little spare time she had to numerous volunteer activities including a number of organizations at Little Flower School and Parish as well as St. John’s Jesuit High School. Mary was also proud to serve as a board member of Cherished Friends of Ahava, a support organization for cancer patients and was one of the original founders of the Caring Tree at Little Flower, a gift program that supports the underprivileged.
Mary was a true matriarch in every sense of the word and will forever be remembered for the love and compassion she personified as a mother not only to her three sons, but to many of their friends as well; she always kept her home open – and pantry full – for those she loved. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who dedicated her life to her family.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Sharon.
Left to cherish her memory is her beloved husband, Tom.
Also surviving her are her sons Chris (Amy), Tony (Abby) and Nick (Emily) and her precious grandson Jacob; her sisters Pamela (Joe) Thacker and Kathy (Opie) Rollison; brother-in-law Tom Stebbins; and her nieces and nephews John, Sam, Kate, Dana and Mackenzie.
Mary will forever be missed by her In-laws, John (Sallie)Hammond, Richard Hammond, Jim Hammond; and Dotty (Jay) Markey; and her nieces and nephews in Maryland, Samantha, Bridget, John Michael, Joey, Kenny, Amanda, Megan, Lauren, David, Sheba, and Tiny.
The family will receive friends at Wisniewski Funeral Home, 2426 N Reynolds Rd., Toledo, from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 26, 2015 and 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 27, 2015.
