Mr. Paul J. Hummer, Jr, 83, of Frederick died on December 23, 2015, at Homewood at Crumland Farms. He is survived by his daughter, Anne K. Massie and husband Curtis, Kapolei, HI; his son, Karl R. Hummer and wife Angie, Boonsboro, MD; his son-in-law, Nusret Hisim, Frederick; three granddaughters, Rachel Hisim, Charleston, SC, Caitlin May and husband Ben, Fairfax, VA, and Hannah Hisim, Frederick; two sisters, Martha Gottschall and Dorothy Ream, Williamsport, PA; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Janice E. (Routzahn) Hummer, his son, Andrew Paul Hummer, his daughter, Sarah E. Hisim, and his brother William Hummer.
Born on August 12, 1932, in Danville, PA, he was the son of the late Paul J. G. Hummer, Sr. and Helen Pursel Hummer.
Paul served in the U. S. Marine Corps with the First Marine Division from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. He graduated from Lock Haven State Teachers College (PA) in 1958 with a B. S. in Education and Union College, Schenectady, NY, in 1968 with a Master of Arts in Science Teaching.
Paul taught biology in Frederick County Schools and part time in the Education Department at Hood College. As a biology teacher, he was president of the Maryland Association of Biology Teachers and Maryland Association of Science Teachers. He served on the board of trustees of the National Association of Biology Teachers and the National Science Teachers Association. He wrote fourteen articles published in three professional science teaching journals and was the co-author of two high school biology books and three laboratory manuals. He conducted over 500 hands-on workshops in teaching techniques, methodology, laboratory activities, and culturing organisms for the classroom at regional, state, and national conventions as well as school systems in different states.
Paul received numerous professional honors throughout his teaching career: The Outstanding Biology Teachers Award for Maryland (1972) from the National Association of Biology Teachers; first place Science Teacher Achievement Award (1972) from the National Science Teachers Association; Outstanding Teacher Award (1984) from the Frederick County Board of Education; Outstanding Teacher Award (1984) from the Community Commons of Frederick, MD: Outstanding High School Science Teacher Award (1984) from the Maryland Science Teachers Association; and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching (1984) presented by the White House through the National Science Foundation.
Paul was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick where he served as an usher for many years. He was also a member of Columbia Lodge No. 58 A. F. & A. M.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 29 from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 PM at Keeney and Basford P. A. Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at Evangelical Lutheran Church, 35 East Church Street, Frederick. Interment will be private at the Boonsboro Cemetery, Boonsboro, MD.
