GEORGE G. HANDLEY, 84, formerly of Lower Macungie Township died March 6, 2016 in Hagerstown, Md.
A 1953 chemical engineer graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, George was an engineering manager for Air Products and Chemicals, Trexlertown, Pa., for 26 years before retiring in 1986. Born in Queens, NY, and raised in Yonkers, NY, he was the son of the late Gilbert P. and Dorothea (Hannan) Handley.
He served in the U.S. Army as a 1st Lieutenant tank platoon commander in the 2nd Armored Division, stationed in Mainz, Germany in 1955-56, facing Russians in the Cold War.
George was a volunteer AARP Tax-Aide Counselor/Coordinator in Emmaus, Pa., and East Greenville, Pa., and received a Certificate of Appreciation in 2009 for 22 years of service. He was an elected Auditor in Lower Macungie Township, Pa., and served on the advisory board for the Air Products Retirees Association. He was a member of the Macungie VFW Post 9254, 2nd Armored Division Association, and the American Chemical Society.
He was predeceased by his companion, Dolores K. Gyory, and former wife Virginia F. Handley.
Survivors: son, Stephen G. of Atlanta, Ga.; daughters Marianne D. Warley of Frederick, Md., and Gail F. Lambert of Princeton, NJ; sister Marian (Saint) Edwards and husband Elliot Edwards of Frederick, Md., as well as six grandchildren and a great-grandson.
