Dorothy B. Thomas

May 2, 1922 — March 30, 2016

D orothy Beatrice Burrier Thomas of Frederick passed away at Citizens Nursing Home on Wednesday, March 30, 2016. Known as Dot, she was the wife of Joseph C. Thomas, Jr., whom she married on October 14, 1944. He preceded her in death in August, 1990.

Born in Lewistown on May 2, 1922, to Jonas L. and Annie Mercer Burrier, Dot was preceded in death by her four brothers: Harry, Murray, George, and Calvin.

A member of the first graduating class of the new Frederick High School in 1940, Dot took a job with Dr. Easterday in Walkersville. She married her beloved Joe and moved to the family farm in Adamstown. Always the farmer’s wife, Dot worked with her husband until his death in 1990.

Settling into agricultural life during the war years meant getting to know some unexpected new faces. Local farmers used German POWs held in Frederick as helpers until the conflict ended. Dot's memories of those times are preserved in a recorded interview and transcript archived at Frederick Community College.

Throughout her active years in family farming, Dot’s special love was tending the sheep and lambs. She often remembered those days with heartwarming and amusing stories.

Dot was an active member of the Adamstown Community Church (formerly known as Trinity United Church of Christ) where affectionately known as "Aunt Dot," she taught Sunday school classes to preschoolers for 20 years. Dot also sang in the church choir and was a loyal member of the congregation's Willing Workers for more than 50 years.

Along with her husband Joe, Dot was a proud charter/life member of the Carroll Manor Fire Company.

Dot Thomas is survived by a daughter, Ann L. Thomas (Rich Moreland) of Frederick and a son, Joseph C. "Tom" Thomas III and wife Lisa of Fredericksburg, Virginia. Additional survivors are grandchildren Jenna Linde of Frederick, Joey Thomas of Walkersville, Lily Thomas and Steven Thomas of Fredericksburg, Virginia, great-grandchildren, Brian Mock, Jandi Linde, Gunner Thomas, and Bo Thomas. She is survived by many nieces and nephews especially, Arthur T. Shook and John Burrier and special friends, Ann and Jim Hutts, are among those who have fond memories of Dot.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the compassionate and caring staff of Citizens Nursing Home and Hospice of Frederick County for easing Dot through her final days.
