George Leonard Weiss

August 16, 1926 — April 22, 2016

Mr. George Leonard Weiss, 89, of Frederick, died Friday, April 22, 2016, at the Glade Valley Nursing Home, Walkersville.

Born August 16, 1926, in Baxter Springs, Kansas, he was the son of the late Leonard and Jennie (Simpson) Weiss.

Mr. Weiss had a lifelong love of airplanes. He began flying planes at age 15. In 1944, he joined the Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet and served in the occupational force during World War II. Following service, he graduated from Pittsburg State University in Kansas. During the Korean Conflict, he was recalled in the U.S. Air Force reserve. He was an information officer with the U.S. Air Force for twenty years and retired in 1970, followed by a twenty-year career as a public relations representative with The Boeing Company. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. In 1966, he received the Air Medal from U.S. Air Force for his service during Vietnam. He was the owner of several antique aircraft, which he loved to pilot. He was particularly proud of his 1936 Fairchild 24 plane, which had been used by the Civil Air Patrol during World War II as a submarine spotter.

Mr. Weiss is survived by his sons David Weiss and Paul Weiss, his daughter Faye Weiss Meyers and husband John, grandchildren Damien Weiss and wife Belen Rodas, Julian Weiss, Marlena Weiss, Melissa Meyers, Ben Meyers, Sumner Weiss and Bridget Austin-Weiss and great-grandchildren, John Weiss Lamont, Jr., Peter Weiss, Ruth Weiss and Miriam Weiss.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Weiss was preceded in death by his son, Steven Weiss.

Graveside service will be held on May 1, 2016 at the Baxter Springs Cemetery in Baxter Springs, Kansas. Arrangements by Keeney and Basford Funeral Home in Frederick, Maryland and Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel in Baxter Springs, Kansas.
