Mr. Gordon Henry "Gordie" Smith, 82, of Frederick, passed away suddenly on Saturday, April 23, 2016, at his home. He was the husband of Mary Braskey Smith. Born on May 28, 1933 in Lonaconing, Maryland, he was the son of the late Henry and Ruth Byers Smith.
He proudly served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army. Gordon was retired after 30 years as a Trooper for the Maryland State Police. He then worked in security for 16 years with the Bechtel Corporation, after this he worked as an associate for 12 years at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home.
Gordon was a member of the Francis Scott Key American Legion, the Frederick Elks Lodge, MD State Troopers Association and the MD State Police Alumni Association.
Gordon had a great love for baseball and was active in Youth Baseball for many years, as a coach and watching many games, including watching his son and grandsons. He was known for his daily visits to Panera's.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his two children, Tracie A. Sampsell and husband Doug and Brian M. Smith and fiancee, Sherrie Specht, all of Frederick, three grandsons, Beau A. Smith, Brian A. Smith and DJ Sampsell, all of Frederick, sister-in-law, Bobbie Duncan and husband Keith, of Walkersville, brother-in-law, Michael Staup, of Hagerstown and niece, Heather Hildebrand and husband Chad.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, April 27, 2016, at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
