Benito Burdo

August 13, 1929 — May 16, 2016

Benito "Ben" Burdo, 86, of Frederick, MD, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family.  He was the loving husband of Margarete Burdo, his devoted wife of 64 years. He was born in Corona, Queens, in New York City, the son of the late Salvatore and Concetta Burdo.
He enlisted and proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War, and while stationed in Germany, he met and married his wife Margarete and began his family. After discharge, they returned stateside and he began his 40 year career as a Typesetter/Proofreader.  He worked at Tri-Arts Press and Primar Typography, both located in downtown Manhattan, while he and his wife raised their two children on Staten Island, NY. Shortly after retirement, he and his wife moved to Frederick to be near his daughter, son-in-law, and grandson and they were an active and cherished part of their lives.
Despite being afflicted for the last quarter of his life with a progressive muscle disease which eventually confined him to a wheelchair, Ben kept himself active at home.  He loved and enjoyed his family above all.  He felt especially blessed to have a caring grandson and he was a supportive and devoted grandfather.  He also had the gift of a green thumb and enjoyed tending to his flowers and tomato garden. He enjoyed watching and collecting movies, doing crossword puzzles and other mind games, and couponing. He was a member of Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church of Frederick and found great comfort and joy in attending Mass there every Sunday.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are his two children, son Ben Burdo and wife Mary Anne, of Guymon, OK, and daughter Margaret  Pigott and husband John, of Frederick, and grandson, John C. B. Pigott, of Frederick.  In addition, he is survived by sister-in-law, Mary Burdo, of Vermont and nieces and nephews, Christine, Debbie, Ann, Therese, Peter, Paul and Lucy in the USA and, also his niece and nephews in Germany, Peter, Sabine, Joachim and Ulrich. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Silvio and Victor Burdo, and one nephew, Thomas.
Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., on Monday, May 23, 2016, at Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 118 East Second Street. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Rev. Kevin Farmer, will officiate. Interment will be private.
