Mr. Daniel Calvin Swomley, 91, of Buckeystown, passed away on Friday, July 22, 2016, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born in Frederick on February 13, 1925, he was a son of the late Daniel and Myrtle Tucker Swomley.
Known to many as Calvin or Cal, he was a long time resident of Buckeystown where he had many friends and was always ready to help a friend especially helping to plow snow with his tractor.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army during WW II. He was retired as a Physical Tester for the ESSROC Cement Company for over 29 years.
Cal had been a coach for many years with the Buckeystown Little League, he was an avid Washington Redskins fan and had collected and dug for civil war artifacts. He was known as a civil war Archaeologist and donated many findings.
Cal was also well known for his pride in owning and racing thoroughbred horses at the Charles Town Races. For over 16 years he was active at the Harpers Ferry flea markets. He also had a great love for his pet dog, Fuzzy.
Surviving are his children, Michael C. Swomley and Trish, of Harpers Ferry, W. VA, and Sandra L. Spahr and husband William K., of Thurmont, one brother, J. Richard Swomley, of Frederick, grandchildren, Heidi Adkins, Michael C. Swomley, Jr., and wife Brittani and great grandchildren, Delaney Adkins and W. Brett Spahr, and many nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by his longtime friend, companion and care giver, Rachel Moler. He was preceded in death by a grandson, William D. Spahr, brother, William "Bill" Swomley and sister, Ruby Gerwig.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m., on Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Thursday, July 28, 2016, at the funeral home. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
