Ivor Elof Burlin Rosencrantz, known as “Pete” to his many friends, and a lifelong resident of Hopehill near Urbana, died Tuesday, August 23, 2016. He was born on June 13, 1932, the son of Sarah Moselle Bayard and Paul Burlin Rosencrantz, Sr. He has been married to Shirley Estelle Wallick since 1960.
A long-time self-employed businessman, he founded and operated Roseco Concrete Products before becoming a master plumber and electrician, septic installer, and building contractor. He took great pride in building classrooms and a gym at The Barnesville School, and a large addition to the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Poolesville under the direction of William Hosler.
An innovative natural engineer, Pete enjoyed restoring old sawmills and creating hydrostatic tractors from scratch. An avid woodworker, he built many furniture pieces for family and friends. Pete moved an entire log house from Bear Branch Road near Bennett Creek to a section of the family farm on Route 80 and built the remainder of his family’s home around it. Residing at the farm he was born on, Pete maintained many of his childhood friendships from Hope Hill and the surrounding community.
Pete attended and wrestled for two years at the University of Maryland, College Park. He was drafted and served almost two years in the U.S. Army, sent to Korea as the cease-fire went into effect.
A long resolute friend of Bill W., he loved helping others without judgment and showed a positive influence in his community.
Pete is survived by Shirley E. Wallick, his wife of 55 years; Ingrid I. Rosencrantz and partner Sue Trainor; Heidi Rosencrantz and grandchildren Keith, Kyle, and Melissa; and Paul Rosencrantz, wife Gretchen, and grandchildren Annika and Amelia. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews.
Born into a family of six, Pete was predeceased by the following siblings: Paul Burlin Rosencrantz, Jr., Bayard Rosencrantz, Mary Flanery, Patricia Ettl, and Randolph Rosencrantz.
