Mr. Jay Hurl Maupin, Sr. passed away suddenly on Thursday, August 18. Born on April 12, 1949, he was the son of the late Hurl D. Maupin and Audrey Engelbrecht Maupin.
Jay was a graduate of Charlotte Hall Military Academy, Class of 1967. He was employed in his early years as a dispatcher for the Frederick City Police Department. Later, he began work for AT&T of Monrovia and retired from that company.
Jay was a great mechanic and could fix just about anything. He shot pool on various teams. He enjoyed spending time with his friends at the Walkersville Bowling Alley, while also participating in the Tuesday night league. He had many friends at the Frederick Moose.
Jay loved going on cruises with his dear friends Joyce and Wayne Mohler. Wayne recently passed on June 20, 2016, and their children David, Frank, Michael, Sherry, Karen and Joanna. Jay also spent many wonderful vacations in Ocean City, MD with his family. He loved country music and "muscle cars".
Jay was the happiest spending time with his son "Jay-Jay, always willing to help with any project that needed to be tackled.
His greatest joy was being a grandfather. "Pop Pop" was always talking about how much he loved his two granddaughters S.A.M. and Maddie and how special they were to him.
Jay is survived by his son, Jay Hurl Maupin, Jr., grandchildren, Savanna and Madelyn Maupin of Wolfsville, ex-wife Alecia Maupin of WV, his sister, Audrey Jean Surenko and her husband Robert of Frederick, niece Janet Stine and her daughter Taylor McConville of Frederick as well as niece Khris and her husband Louis Keepers and their children MaKenzie and Logan of Frederick. Jay will also be remembered by special friends, Rich Strobel, Beverly Sharrer, Vickie Coleman and lifelong friend Allen Weddle.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Jon M. Maupin, his sister, Beverly Maupin Rhodes Jackson as well as lifelong friend Billy Downs.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 26 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Keeney and Basford PA Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 27 at 11:00 AM in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the Funeral Home. Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.
