Bonnie Vee Hartsough

December 19, 1941 — October 2, 2016

Bonnie Vee Hartsough, 74, of Frederick, MD, passed away at Frederick Memorial Hospital after two years of declining health.  She was born in Frederick  in 1941, the only child of the late Viella Mae and Harry Clayton Hartsough.
Ms. Hartsough graduated from Saint John’s Literary Institution in 1959, and obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Maryland’s College of Education in 1963.  She obtained a Master’s Degree and  also pursued a PhD.  Bonnie was an enthusiastic and diligent teacher, rejoicing in the successes of her students, many of whom kept in touch with her.  She lent her efforts to directing school plays, coaching students for history and spelling bees, and tutoring.  She taught at various public elementary schools in Frederick County, Maryland and Wilmington, Delaware, and ended her career at The Banner School, Frederick.
In the 1960’s and 1970’s Bonnie sought adventure through traveling with friends and family in England, Ireland, Greece, Morocco and Mexico and stateside in Minnesota, Delaware and Pennsylvania.  During those decades she also taught at an experimental school for teaching advancement at Florida State University, in the Portuguese Azores Islands and at a US military base in Germany.
In her free time she loved to read, knit, cook, and play competitive card and board games.  Bonnie was known for having pets in her classroom to entertain and teach responsibility to her students.  She always had a soft spot for cats and adopted quite a few over the years because they were good companions.
Bonnie had a colorful personality and was drawn to people who had wit and intelligence.  She particularly cherished the friendships of her longtime cooking partner and caregiver, Bertha Musser; wise counselor and fixer of all things electronic, Tom Pollack; godchildren Sarah, Connor and Gavin Laughland and their mother, “adopted little sis” Billie Laughland and her husband, Myron Ahalt; and special longtime adventuring friend, Margaret Ingalls. She is survived by her cousins, including Carol Clark and Jacqueline Weaver, whom she held in high esteem.
Those wishing to honor Bonnie’s memory may contribute to the Covenant House, www.covenanthouse.org ; The Frederick County Humane Society, www.fchs.org ; or the Historical Society of Frederick County, http://www.hsfcinfo.org .
Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  A private celebration of Bonnie’s life will be held in December, 2016.  Arrangements are being handled by the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home and family member Thaddeus J. Weaver, Esquire, of Delaware.
