George W. Astlin, Jr. (“Woodie”), 77, passed away on January 6, 2017 due to complications from a traumatic injury.
Woodie, a.k.a. “PapPap” was born on July 9, 1939, son of George W. Astlin, Sr.
and Myrtle Lee Nicholson, and Stepson of Mrs. Reba Stockman Astlin.
He is survived by his wife and the “love of his life”, Donna Taylor Astlin, sister Norma Lee Coyner, daughter Tammy Brock and son-in-law, Shawn Brock, daughter Cheryl Astlin , daughter Diane Neely, and several nieces and nephews. Grandchildren include Sarra “Colby” Tetlow and grandson David Roesle along with great grandchildren Riley Karstens, Evie Karstens and Maddy Tetlow.
Woodie proudly worked as a member of the Steamfitter’s Union in Washington, DC Local 602 from 1959 until 1987 and later worked as a draftsman before his retirement in 2001.
Along with being an avid Redskin and NASCAR fan, PapPap’s great love was his quaint and humble home where he enjoyed watching the deer and the birds outside his window in a sanctuary he provided them, refinishing antiques in his workshop while listening to Bluegrass music and watching the world go by from his rocker on the old front porch.
He was a great provider and sage advisor to his children and grandchildren, a stellar and loving husband, and a man of unwavering principles. Above all, he was a gentle soul who understood that life’s simplest pleasures are, after all, the very best ones.
The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. The funeral service will be held at 11am on Friday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
