Gareth Burall Lease

Gareth Burall Lease, 89, of Walkersville, MD, passed away on Friday, January 27, 2017 at Glade Valley Nursing Home. He was the husband of Anna Leiter Lease for 57 years.

Born August 18, 1927, Frederick, MD, he was the son of the late Norman S. and Edith B. Lease. After graduating from Frederick High School he continued his education at Bridgewater College and University of Maryland, earning a B.S. in agriculture and a M.S. in education. His love of agriculture was a constant theme throughout his life that began during his childhood growing up on farms near Urbana and New Market. As a young adult he traveled to Nepal to assist in agricultural development through the International Volunteer Service and the Brethren Volunteer Service. He also delivered cattle to Guatemala and Turkey with the Heifer Project International. At home he was an active lifetime member of the New Market Grange.

Mr. Lease was an avid reader and believed educating yourself was important. He taught a combination of agriculture and science for 28 years and retired from Carroll County Public Schools. His faith was a driving force in his life. Throughout his life, he was a member of Bush Creek Church of the Brethren, Union Bridge Church of the Brethren and Glade Valley Church of the Brethren during which time he served actively as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He enjoyed singing in the church choirs for over 50 years. He loved to travel and camp with his wife and family, visiting all fifty states and many countries around the world.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Karen Lease and Linda Raue of Lombard, IL, Carla Lease of Frederick, MD, Katrina and Kris Anderson of Walkersville, MD, and Cathy Lease and Blaine Wenzel of Rockville, MD, and grandchildren, Anna and Kayla Raue-Lease, William and Lauren Anderson, and Elleanor and Thomas Wenzel. He is also survived by his sisters Betty Thompson and John, and Mary Edith Hallock and Ted and sister-in-law Barbara Leiter. He is predeceased by his in-laws Lorraine Leiter, J. Robert and Miriam Fries, Robert Leiter.

The family will receive friends and family on Monday, January 30, 2017 from 2 - 4 pm and 6 - 8 pm at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at 11 am at Bush Creek Church of the Brethren, 4821 Green Valley Rd, Monrovia, MD 21770. After which, there will be a reception.
