Bernard Lucchino

October 19, 1916 — February 8, 2017

Mr. Bernard Lucchino (Bennie Paul), 100, of Frederick, Maryland, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, at his Somerford House residence.  He lived a long, healthy and happy life.  He was the husband of the late Florence G. (Evans) Lucchino.

Bernard was born on October 19, 1916, in Omaha, Nebraska, of Douglas County.  He was one of five children to the late Antonio and Filomena Lucchino, who emigrated from Italy.

Bernard held numerous jobs during his youth and spent the majority of his career in construction engineering.  His last job was managing the underground tunneling operations for the DC Metro.

During WWII, Bernard served in the U.S. Army.  He was a Paratrooper and a member of the OSS, the predecessor of the CIA.  He was wounded during the war and received an honorable discharge.

He was married to the late Florence G (Evans) Lucchino for over 50 years and raised one daughter, the late Shirley Yvonne.  During his retirement, he and his wife raised their granddaughters, Yvette and Cherie Hubbel.

Bernard spent his last 20 years in Frederick, residing at the Francis Scott Key apartments.  He enjoyed his years in Frederick immensely.  He was often referred to as the “Mayor of Frederick” because he was so well-known downtown.

His favorite pastimes were cooking, football and boxing.  He enjoyed eating “al fresco,” picnicking, gardening, hiking and camping.  He often said that the greatest pleasures in life are the simple things.

He was adored by his wife, daughter, granddaughters, great granddaughter, great grandson, nieces and nephews.  He was very generous and kind to his many friends and acquaintances.

He is survived by his granddaughters, Yvette C. Hubbel (and grandson-in-law Robert

Hollingshead) of Potomac, Maryland, and Cherie C. O'Connor (and grandson-in-law Jason O’Connor) of Ashburn, Virginia, great-granddaughter, Caitlin E. Hollingshead, great-grandson, Michael O'Connor, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence, and his daughter, Shirley Y. Morgal and his son-in-law, Carter C. Hubbel, Jr.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 16, 2017, at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, located at 106 E. Church Street, Frederick, Maryland.

The service will be held on Monday, February 20, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.  Internment will immediately follow at the Potomac United Methodist Church Cemetery in Potomac, Maryland.  All friends are welcome.
