John Stephen Spicer, Sr., age 92 of Frederick, Maryland died June 3, 2017 at Homewood of Frederick. He was the husband of Rebecca Hanna Spicer (Bucky) for 62 years. Born in Harlan, Kentucky on June 10, 1924, John was the son of Charles Booker Spicer and Addie Neal Spicer. He is survived by his two daughters, Rebecca Himes and husband Richard of Middletown, Stephenie Hall and husband Sam of Elkridge, his son, John Jr. and wife Terri of Walkersville; grandchildren Sara Riley and husband Patrick, Ana Himes, Taylor Pearch and husband Richard, Rachel and Lili Spicer, and great grandson Colin Riley. He was a devoted husband and proud father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Addie, brothers Neal, Hugh, Philip, Charles, and sister Sara. He is survived by brothers Oscar, William and Edwin.
He was employed with DeLaval, Inc. for 27 years working in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and West Virginia. He was a partner with his father and brother at Spice Ayr Farms, Gettysburg, PA. He farmed for many years with his wife Bucky at Johnny Reb Farm in Woodsboro, Maryland, and then at Johnny Reb Farm at Uphill, on Bethel Road in Frederick.
He graduated from Frederick Community College and attended Geneva College, Western Kentucky University, and Carnegie-Mellon University. He was also a real estate broker licensed in Maryland.
He was a member of the Columbia Lodge No. 58 AF & AM Masonic Lodge in Frederick MD. He was a member of Brook Hill United Methodist Church, Yellow Springs.
John was one of the last of a dying breed. Part of the Greatest Generation, he had honesty, integrity, ethics, tough as nails when needed, and soft as cotton with the people he loved. The world needs more people like him. He will be remembered by many and forgotten by few.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, June 9, at 11:00 at the Brook Hill United Methodist Church, 8946 Indian Springs Road, Frederick, Maryland 21702. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Brook Hill United Methodist Church. Interment will be held at a later date.
