R. Monroe Feaga

Russell Monroe (R. Monroe) Feaga, 95, of Frederick, passed away on July 14, 2017. Born on May 2, 1922, in Frederick County, Harmony Grove, he was a son of the late Russell Staley Feaga and Hattie Marie Dutrow Feaga. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Catherine Stauffer Feaga. Monroe was a graduate of Frederick High School, Class of 1941, and in August 1966, he graduated from the School of Bank Management, University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was employed by the Frederick County National Bank from 1941 to February 1943. From March 1943 to February 1946, he served in the Armed Forces as a member of the Air Force Ground Crew. He was stationed in Guam, Tinian, and Saipan from April 1945 to February 1946, with the B-29 Group. He served with the 315th Bombardment Wing of the Air Force in Foreign Service, and was promoted from Private to Sergeant. Monroe received the following Decorations and Citations: Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon. He received Honorable Discharge from Fort Meade on March 2, 1946. Upon his return to Frederick, he continued his career at the Frederick County Courthouse (Clerk’s Office) from March 1946 to February 1949, and Fredericktown Bank and Trust Company from February 1, 1949 until his retirement on December 24, 1986. He served in several capacities at Fredericktown Bank and Trust Company, including branch manager at the West Patrick Street branch and Senior Vice President at the main office on North Market Street. Monroe was a member of the Catoctin Club, the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge #684, the F.S.K. American Legion Post #11, the Thurmont Dance Club, and the Over the Hill Gang. He held membership in the National Association of Bank Auditors and Comptrollers where he served for one term, and he served as Chairman of Group 2, Maryland Bankers Association. Monroe was a lifelong member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served two terms as a member of the Church Council. After retirement, he served as a church money counter for 25 years, from 1987 to 2012. Monroe enjoyed gardening and other outdoor work, riding his tractors, bus trips with Catherine to several states, attending his high school class reunions, the Fredericktown Bank retiree luncheons, and most importantly, spending time with his family.

Surviving, in addition to his wife Catherine, are his children: Helen Esworthy (Artie Jr.), Ralph M. (Margie), Virginia Andrews (John Sr.), and Robert S. (Mary); his grandchildren: Artie Esworthy III (Jane), Shannon Andrews Gregory (Mark), Conner Esworthy (Karl), Barry Feaga (Tara), John Andrews Jr. (Ariana), and Brian Feaga (Crystal); his beloved great-grandchildren who always made him smile: Leah C. Feaga, John W. Andrews III, Ainsley E. Esworthy, and another great-granddaughter (Andrews) due in August; his sisters-in-law: Caroline R. Feaga, Betty S. Stauffer, Katharine M. Stauffer, and Margaret S. Naeny; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and long-time friends, Ray and Gloria Gafney.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Garland P. Feaga.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00AM, on Friday, July 21, 2017 at Evangelical Lutheran Church, 31 East Church Street, Frederick, MD. Officiating will be Rev. Doug Jones. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
