Mrs. Shirley Burdette Rivers Dudrow, 87, of Martinsburg, West Virginia and formerly of Frederick, MD. passed away on Monday, August 7, 2017, after a lengthy illness. Twice married, she was the wife of the late Wesley A. Rivers and James G. Dudrow. She was born on January 8, 1930 in Hyattstown and she was a daughter of the late Willie L. and Maude Wilkins Burdette.
As the youngest of five siblings, she enjoyed an active life in the country with many friends. Following high school she attended secretarial school and found a job with the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, She married her first husband and settled in Hyattstown. Her job career brought her to Fort Detrick where she worked until she decided to leave and raise a family. When her children were of school age, she ran the local Hyattstown Grocery Store where she became the rural post mistress. In the 1960's the family moved to Frederick where she went to work for the Department of Social Services. With the illness and death of her husband, she went to work for Hood College until she married her second husband and they moved to Martinsburg where she remained after his death, She enjoyed bowling, needlework and sewing. She was generous and caring for all, frequently ignoring her own health problems to help others in need. She wanted to be remembered simply as a country girl with a small town heritage.
Surviving her are her children, Susan Rivers of Frederick and Daniel Rivers and wife Louise of Columbia and many nieces and nephews. She is remembered by her social group, the Bunco Babes of Martinsburg, as well as many special neighbors. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Rebecca Price and three brothers, Norman Burdette, Lloyd Burdette and Raymond Burdette.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m., on Thursday, August 9, 2017, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, August 11, 2017, at the funeral home. The Rev. Kim Hintzman, will officiate. Interment will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.

These donations will honor the fine staff and facility that cared for her in her final hours. Above all, she would want us all to rejoice in life well lived.
