Joann Rice Francis

Mrs. Francis was a graduate of Portlock High School in Portlock, Virginia. She retired from her work at Giant Food after serving the company for 25 years. In her free time she enjoyed working with ceramics, bowling, sewing and traveling with her husband. She was able to visit every state in the United States and also many other places around the world. She was a member of the Allegro Motor Home Club, Chesapeake Chapter. Most of all, she was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was very good at spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Francis is survived by her children: Patricia L. Teal and husband Michael of Waldorf, MD, Diane K. Kirkland and husband J. Neil of Germantown, MD, and Thomas V. Francis and husband Gregory W. Campbell of Frederick; her grandchildren: Jennifer L. Mayes of Capital Heights, MD, Christopher M. Mayes and girlfriend Shakeiya Marshall of Odenton, MD, John N. Kirkland, Jr. and wife Mary Chelle of Gainesville, VA, Steven R. Kirkland and wife Bernadine of Waldorf, MD, Heather E. Pardue and husband Jason of Bangkok, Thailand, Ryan C. Kirkland of Waldorf, Adam B. Francis and wife Pamela of Frederick, MD, Aron B. Francis of Twinsburg, OH, Rachel R. Faulkner and husband Andrew of Hagerstown, MD, and Kirby A. Francis and husband Justin Kershner of Hagerstown, MD; her great-grandchildren: Christopher M. Mayes, Jr., Nicolas C. Kirkland, Andrew C. Kirkland, Elizabeth C. Kirkland, Kaylee E. Kirkland, Kara E. Francis, Talia K. Francis, Alexa L. Francis, Holden J.M. Faulkner, Cecilia R. Faulkner, Layla A. Faulkner, and Elijah D. Faulkner; her siblings: Grace I. Tyson and William B. Wheelbarger, her sisters-in-law LaVerne Wheelbarger of Chesapeake, VA, and Virginia Hinkston of Fremont, CA; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Francis is preceded in death by her son Michael Francis who passed away in 1972, and her siblings: Calvin J. Wheelbarger, Jr., Marion E. Moulton, Dale Wheelbarger, Carlton Wheelbarger, Carolyn G. Clemmons and John "Jack" Wheelbarger.
Friends will be received on Friday, September 22, 2017, from 2 to 4 PM at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick where services will be held in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home at 4 PM. The interment will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mrs. Francis' name to The National Kidney Foundation,1301 York Rd, Suite 404, Lutherville, MD 21093.
