Gene Leon Bennett

Mr. Gene Leon Bennett, 89, of Thurmont, passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2017, at his home. He was the husband of Bette Adams Bennett. They had been married for 60 years. Born in Hinton, West Virginia on February 5, 1928, he was a son of the late Melvin and Ursa Keaton Bennett.
Gene was a graduate of Hinton High School and was a great football player and was inducted in the Hall of Fame in high school and received a full scholarship for football and attended Washington and Lee University. He had attended the University of Michigan to be a Farrier.
He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He taught school for several years in Hinton, Frederick County and Anne Arundel County. He was retired from the State of Maryland as a farm service representative.
Gene had a great love for animals especially horses and was considered an avid horseman. He had also served as the superintendent for the Frederick County 4-H Horse and Pony Program.
His family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for his care at Frederick Memorial Hospital, the Glade Valley Center and also to Hospice.
Surviving in addition to his wife is his daughter, Jeanenne M. Bennett, of Waynesboro, PA, one sister, Mildred Reed, of Texas, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Glenn Bennett.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., on Friday, December 1, 2017, in the Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 Catoctin Highway, (Route 15) Frederick, MD 21701. Those wishing to attend may meet inside the main gate by 1:45 PM. Pastor Dana Merserau, will officiate. Arrangements are with the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, Frederick.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a charity of ones choice or to the Frederick County Humane Society, 550 Highland Street, Suite 200, Frederick, MD 21701.
