October 27, 1926 — December 7, 2017

Richard (“Dick”) Hall McCormick (91) of Middletown, MD passed away peacefully after a short illness on Dec. 7, 2017 at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, MD. He was born in Hartford, CT on Oct. 27, 1926, the son of Howard F. McCormick, President and Owner of H.F. McCormick Tobacco Co., and Marion Hall McCormick. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Eileen A. McCormick; sons Richard Hall McCormick Jr. of Brooklyn, CT, and Brian J. McCormick of Brooklyn, NY and Pawcatuck, CT; daughter Karen McCormick and son-in-law Gregory Baruch of McLean, VA; three grandchildren, Scott McCormick and William and John Baruch; and two sisters, Phyllis Lowerre of Fenwick Island, DE, and Patti O’Connor of Dublin, OH. After graduating from Weaver High School in Hartford, Richard served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea at the end of World War II. He attended the College of William and Mary, then transferred to Virginia Tech where he earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1950. Richard had a long career largely focused on nuclear power; he worked at General Dynamics’ Electric Boat Division developing guidelines for the Navy’s nuclear submarine program; General Electric (Maine); New York State Gas & Electric (Binghamton, NY); and Bechtel Power, from which he retired as a project manager, having made important contributions on many nuclear power plants, including Grand Gulf, Indian Point Unit 3, Farley, Hatch, and Vogtle. Richard will be dearly missed for his brilliant mind, infectious sense of humor, and enthusiasm. He was a devoted and much-loved husband, father, and grandfather. An avid reader and historian, he dazzled people with his encyclopedic knowledge in many areas including WW2 history, aviation, and innovative technologies. His family is receiving friends from 5-7 pm on Fri., Dec. 15 at Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, MD. A mass and Christian burial with military funeral honors will take place in Connecticut in the spring.
