Patricia Elizabeth Brown

Mrs. Patricia Elizabeth "Patty" Brown, 73, of Frederick, MD, passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2017 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, after a succession of two strokes. She was the loving wife of Bruce M. Brown. Born in Syracuse, New York on September 28, 1944, she was a daughter of the late Paul Harold, Jr., and Elva Lennie Dunham Gates.
Patty was a graduate of Chittenengo High School, in New York, received her BS degree in Elementary Education from the State University of New York at Fredonia, a Master’s Degree in Special Education with emphasis on Learning Disabilities at Hood College, Frederick and 30 hours in English as a Second Language, from the University of Maryland, Baltimore Campus.
She taught in Frederick County elementary education at Walkersville and Frederick city schools, special education at Monocacy Middle and English as a Second Language at all levels throughout Frederick County. She had also owned and operated Valley Nursery School which was State accredited in Middletown. She retired in 2000. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Frederick.
Patty was fun to be around. She was loving, happy, and enjoyed playing jokes on close family members. Besides her family, Pat loved reading, word searches, decorating for the holidays and travel. If a trip wasn't planned, even a short one, she would get most restless. As an educator, she had formed lasting bonds with a number of her students. Even though Pat had a succession of medical challenges, she rarely complained, instead focusing her positive energy and happiness on others.
Surviving in addition to her husband are her two sons, Patrick E. Brown and wife Kelly, of North Port, FL and Christopher B. Brown and wife Erin, of Frederick, and her granddaughter, Justina Elizabeth Brown, of Virginia, her sister, Suzanne M. Giannaccini and husband Niles, of Maple Grove, MN, her brother, Thomas E. Gates and wife Kari, of OR, sister-in-law, Lorna Gates, of Idaho, her uncle, Russell Gates and wife Pat, of Syracuse, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Teresa Michelle Brown and a brother, Paul E. Gates.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m., on Friday, December 22, 2017, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., on Saturday, December 23, 2017, at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 118 East Second Street, Frederick. The celebrant will be, Rev. Charles Wible. Interment will be private in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
