Constance “Connie” Elizabeth Wagner (nee Carstens), of Frederick, MD, died peacefully on March 6, 2018 at the age of 97 years 11 months.
Connie was born on April 8, 1920, in Kalamazoo, MI, to the late Aubrey and Hazel (nee Jackson) Carstens. She married Frank W. Wagner, of Grand Rapids, MI, in 1941. They moved from Michigan to Maryland, at the start of WWII, so Frank could attend Army Officer Candidate School. The couple welcomed a daughter, Patricia Elizabeth, in 1944. Connie and Frank moved to Frederick, MD, so he could start working at Camp Detrick (now Ft. Detrick). Several years later, they welcomed their son, Frank Carstens. Connie was a loving wife mother.
Connie is survived by her children: Pat Ahalt (Denny) of Mt. Airy, MD and Frank C. Wagner of Frederick, MD, granddaughters: Laura Heck (Drew) and Jenny Ahalt of Mt. Airy, MD, great grandsons: Corey Heck (fiancée Emi) and Logan Heck of Mt. Airy, MD. Connie is, also, survived by numerous nieces, and nephews living across the US. She was the last member of her immediate family preceded in death by her parents and 4 sisters: Virginia Myrbach (Charles), Audrey Zoutman (Ray), Mary Peck (Jim), and Shirley McCarty (Frank)
Connie was an American Red Cross volunteer helping with the blood mobiles and a Girl Scout leader for her daughter’s troops. She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends, baking desserts/cooking for her family and sewing outfits for family members/dolls. Connie and her husband were members of the Damascus Travel Club. They traveled to Europe, Aruba, Alaska… to name a few places… and many trips back to the Midwest to visit family.
All services will be private and held at a later date. Connie donated to numerous charities/causes in her quiet way.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, nursing assistants/students, chaplains, transport staff, food service staff and housekeeping staff of Frederick Memorial Hospital…especially, the staff of floors 4B and 3B for their dedicated care and tireless efforts.
