Cleopatra Campbell Anderson, of Frederick, passed away on Thursday, March 8, 2018, at the Glade Valley Center, Walkersville, of COPD. She was born in Worchester County, Maryland on December 18, 1935, and was educated in public schools of Maryland, and at Baylor University, The Ohio State University, and the University of New Mexico.
After obtaining her law degree at the University of New Mexico in 1967, she came to Frederick as an associate at the law firm of Mathias, Mathias and Michel. In 1972 she became the first woman prosecutor in Frederick County history, becoming also the first assistant state's attorney under States Attorney Robert Rothenhoefer.
Miss Campbell practiced law in Maryland for over forty years. In 2010 she was elected to a four year term as a Judge of the Orphans Court for Frederick County. Governor Martin O'Malley then appointed her as Chief Judge of the Orphans Court for Frederick County. She was reelected to the Orphans Court in 2014.
A world traveler, Miss Campbell had many adventures and some misadventure,including breaking her arm on the Matterhorn in Switzerland, and becoming ill with pneumonia on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
She loved activities on the water, boating, sailing, crabbing and fishing. All her life she was an advocate for the underdog. A farmer's daughter with great empathy for animals, sometimes she rescued animals that were not lost.
During 40 years in Frederick, Miss Campbell was active in many organizations, including the Frederick County Humane Society where she served as president and Goodwill Industries, of which she was also president. She was President of the Frederick Branch, American Association of University Women, two-term President of Frederick County Bar Association, President of Frederick County Criminal Defense Bar, member of Board of Governors, Maryland Bar Association, and member of the Maryland Bar Association. She was a member of the Rotary Club of Frederick and the St. Mary's Chapter of All Saints Episcopal Church.
Surviving are her twin sister, Penelope Campbell, step daughter, Elizabeth Anderson Comer, and special friends, Patsy and Ladd Davies. She was the wife of the late G. Eugene Anderson, a Frederick County farmer and engineer, who died in 1995.
Miss Campbell will lie in state from 10 a.m., to 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at the All Saints Episcopal Church, 106 West Church Street, Frederick. Interment will be private in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., at the church. The Rev. Adrien Dawson, will officiate.
Miss Campbell's wish was to have no flowers, with memorial contributions made to the Justice for All Fund of the Bar Association of Frederick County, In C/O the Community Foundation of Frederick County, 312 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701.
