Robert E. Broadrup, D.D.S., aged 77, died at home on Thursday, March 29, 2018, with his wife
Linda at his side. He succumbed to metastatic pancreatic cancer after battling valiantly for eight
months.
A lifelong Fredericktonian, Robert served many communities: generations of dental patients,
Evangelical Lutheran Church’s congregation, local charities, and Homewood residents. He was
a faithful husband, beloved father, and devoted grandfather.
Robert was the middle son of the late Dr. Charles and Elizabeth Broadrup and husband of Linda
Stup Broadrup. Robert and Linda, both 1958 graduates of Frederick High School, married on
June 26, 1965.
Robert earned his Bachelor of Science from University of Maryland College Park in 1962.

Upon graduation in 1966 he earned honors in prosthodontics and oral surgery as well as the Timothy Heatwole Award, given to the graduate “who best exemplified qualities of ethical standards, kindness, and humanitarianism.” This award foretold the way he practiced dentistry for 40 years. Robert joined his father’s dental practice (established 1932) in the Professional Building on North Market St. He assisted generations of patients before retiring in 2006. Robert wrote, “my true love was getting to know and work with so many different and wonderful patients. That was the real reward of the practice of dentistry.” Robert actively served the American Dental Association, Maryland State Dental Association, and Frederick County Dental Society. He was a member of the Cotillion Club, worked on the City of Frederick’s Personnel Commission for sixteen years under Mayor Ronald Young, and served the United Way of Frederick’s Board of Directors as President. He also acted as a trustee for the Holmes D. Baker Jr. Memorial Camp in Braddock Heights, Maryland.
One of his “greatest joys as a boy” was joining Boy Scouts of America, especially his adventures at Philmont Scout Ranch. He earned his Eagle Award, its highest rank. “I really believed the statement, ‘Once an Eagle, always an Eagle.’ To that end, as an adult, I enjoyed most of all being a member of the Catoctin District Eagle Board of Review,” he wrote. A committed Rotarian for over 50 years, Robert served the Rotary Club of Frederick on its Board of Directors and as President (1974-75). He was the first Rotarian in Frederick to receive the Paul Harris Award in 1971. In 2009, Robert was named a Rotary Fellow, the highest honor
that Rotary can bestow.
After retirement Robert also volunteered as a Trustee of the Community Foundation of Frederick County. Robert served Evangelical Lutheran Church on Church Council, in the Men’s Club, as a Stephen Minister, and as caring Garden Angel. “I most enjoyed taking care of the rose garden,” he said. He cultivated roses at his home as well, brightening Homewood residents’ days with displays of his blossoms. throughout his adult life, he took great joy in sports, especially tennis, skiing, and rollerblading.
He and Linda shared skiing trips with friends. Robert nurtured close friendships with his poker
buddies and tennis groups over many decades. He and Linda gave their children and grandchildren wonderful experiences in the surf and sand of Ocean City, Maryland, where they gathered each summer. He taught by example how to be a faithful husband, caring father, and generous supporter of people from all walks of life.
