John earned his high school diploma at Ravenscroft School in Raleigh, N.C. John coached numerous youth and college soccer teams over the years, and volunteered regularly with the Mental Health Association of Frederick County. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church.

John and Jill loved their family vacations with their daughter Rixey Caroline Browning and son Judson Browning in the Outer Banks, John’s home state of North Carolina. He and Jill played on adult soccer teams for nearly all of their married life.
