Mrs. Winifred (Winnie) Lorraine Hiltner, 92, passed away on Wednesday, May 16th at Buckingham’s Choice (BC) Retirement Center in Adamstown, Maryland where she had lived for the past 18 years. Winnie was born on February 16, 1926 in Frederick, Md. She was the daughter of the late Martha G. (Bond) and Irving L. Smith of Frederick. She graduated from Frederick High School in 1943 and from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing with a Registered Nurse Degree in 1946. After graduating from Mercy, she planned on entering the United States Cadet Nurse Corps, but the war ended before she could join. Winnie worked as an RN at Frederick Memorial Hospital (FMH) and also did private duty nursing. She married the late Donald H. Hiltner on a hot July 5th, 1947 and was married to him for almost 50 years. She was a lifelong member of All Saints’ Episcopal Church, where she served on the altar guild, was President of St. Anne’s Chapter and the Coordinator for their annual June Festival. She served as a Girl Scout leader and assistant leader for her daughter’s troop and assisted with her son’s Cub Scout Troop. Winnie was a member of the FMH Auxillary with over 4000 volunteer hours mostly served in the Emergency Room. She was also a member of the Francis Scott Key American Legion Post 11.
She and her husband opened the Frederick Camera Shop in 1947 and later joined with Charlie Roelke as a partner in Hiltner and Roelke. Hiltner and Roelke eventually became Hiltner’s Inc. where she served as an officer of the company.
Winnie and Donald travelled extensively and at one point resided part time in San Juan, Puerto Rico where she volunteered at the local Presbyterian Hospital. They also lived part time in Ocean City, Maryland.
In 1996, Winnie and Donald donated real estate properties to begin The Monocacy Foundation, an endowment fund for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Frederick County.
While at Buckingham’s Choice, she donated her time teaching water aerobics and did this from 2000 until November of 2017. She also served as a member of BC Resident Association and was a active member of the Episcopal Congregation at BC.
Winnie was known for enjoying hard-shelled crabs and making her homemade spicy crab soup for the family to enjoy on Christmas Eve. She was proud to see her grandson graduate from veterinary school in 2014 and was able to dance at her granddaughter’s wedding in November 2017. A fond memory was when the family surprised her with a 90th birthday cruise to the Caribbean. Winnie visited multiple ports and made friends with everyone on board the ship. She enjoyed drinking champagne with her granddaughter every evening and staying up later than her family on most nights.
Winnie is survived by her two children Donald H. Hiltner, Jr and wife Stacey, and her daughter Martha “Marty” Young (wife of the late Warren E. Young, Jr.). Winnie also leaves behind her two grandchildren Dr. Donald H. Hiltner, III and Carrie Young Kroh and husband, Mark. She was predeceased by an infant daughter, who passed in 1958, and her bichon Daisy.
A funeral service will be held at Buckingham’s Choice, 3200 Baker Circle, Adamstown, MD 21710, in the Multipurpose Room on Monday, May 21, 2018 at 10 am. Officiating will be the Dr. Renny Martin, Chaplain at Buckingham’s Choice, and Reverend Columba Gilliss. Interment will take place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
