Dorothy Marie Kirkland

Mrs. Dorothy Marie Kirkland, age 90, of Grantsville, MD, passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2018, at Goodwill Retirement Community Nursing Home in Grantsville, MD. She was the loving wife of John Harold Kirkland who preceded her in death on June 26, 1975. Born on March 30, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Dennis and Leona Paul Smith.

Mrs. Kirkland retired from her work at the U.S. House of Representatives after serving for over 20 years. In her free time, she enjoyed working in her yard, cooking a fantastic Thanksgiving dinner every year, playing the slots, shopping and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Most of all, she was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Mrs. Kirkland is survived by her children: Peggy Elaine Davis and husband Jerry of Lexington, TN; John Neil Kirkland and wife Diane of Fountain, FL; and Carol Ann Kirkland and husband Jonathan Lapp of Addison, PA; her grandchildren: Tim Davis of Rappahannock, VA; Teresa Davis of Lexington, TN; John N. Kirkland, Jr. and wife Mary Chelle of Gainesville, VA; Steven R. Kirkland and wife Bernadine of White Plains, MD; Heather E. Pardue and husband Jason of Bangkok, Thailand; Ryan C. Kirkland and wife Lindsey of Bel Alton, MD; Adam B. Francis and wife Pamela of Frederick, MD; Aron B. Francis of Twinsburg, OH; Rachel R. Faulkner and husband Andrew of Hagerstown, MD; and Kirby A. Francis and husband Justin Kershner of Hagerstown, MD; her great-grandchildren: Shaun Wright, Lauria Wright, Catherine Wright, Bryan Davis, Nicolas C. Kirkland, Andrew C. Kirkland, Elizabeth C. Kirkland, Kaylee E. Kirkland, Kara E. Francis, Talia K. Francis, Alexa L. Francis, Holden J.M. Faulkner, Cecilia R. Faulkner, Layla A. Faulkner, and Elijah D. Faulkner.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Kirkland is preceded in death by her son Paul Harold who passed away in 1960, and her brother, James T. Dennis.

Friends will be received on Saturday, May 26, 2018, from 1:30 to 2 PM at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home,106 E. Church St., Frederick, MDwhere services will be held in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home at 2 PM. The interment will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mrs. Kirkland’s name to St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
