Mrs. Jeanne Marie Lawshe Kemp died peacefully on Wednesday, June 20 at Buckingham’s Choice Retirement Home after a brief illness and a long full life. She had lived there for over 15 years and had been very active in that community. Mrs. Kemp led an exemplary life of thoughtfulness, kindness, generosity, and a positive attitude! She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, William H. Kemp, in 2003.
Born February 21, 1918 in Buffalo, NY, she was the daughter of Marie Reed Lincoln ad Edwin Erland Lawshe. After her family moved to Baltimore, Mrs. Kemp graduated from Goucher College in 1938 where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Upon Graduation, she enrolled in the executive training program at Hutzler’s Department Store in Baltimore where she was an assistant buyer. She married the love of her life, William H. Kemp, in 1947. They had met as pen pals while William was serving in India and China during World War II. They moved to Frederick, Maryland that same year. Mrs. Kemp was a natural teacher. She taught 5th grade at North Frederick Elementary School for several years. In graduate school she studied methods for teaching dyslexic students. As a private language therapist, she helped two generation of students overcome dyslexia.
Mrs. Kemp had been very active in the Frederick community. She had served on the Board of Associates of Hood College and was secretary to the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of the Order of the Good Samaritan at Frederick Memorial Hospital, past member of Heritage Frederick, Advocates for the Homeless, and Delaplaine Visual Arts Center. She was also a member of the Garden Club of Frederick for 63 years. Her interests include flower arranging, knitting, traveling, playing bridge and planning parties!
Mrs. Kemp is survived by daughter Nancy Kemp Cline and son in law Dr. Casper E. Cline, two grandchildren: Dr. Matthew Cline and wife Haidee; Jennifer Cline Schmalzle and husband Ryan plus five great grandchildren: William, Anna, and Brooks Cline; Abigail and Aidan Schmalzle.
