Betty Gibson

Betty Gibson, most recently a resident of Boonsboro Maryland, died on August 22, 2018.   Born August 12, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of Theodore Anderson (1895-1973) and Armida Hedborg Anderson (1899-1987) and who had emigrated from Finland in 1916 and 1921 respectively.
She was the wife of Ronald C. Gibson (August 18, 1929-April 16, 2002), a London native and British Army veteran who came to the United States in 1950, the same year she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota.    Following graduation she moved to New York City where she worked in publishing, first at Harper & Brothers and subsequently as an assistant production manager at Mademoiselle Magazine.   Her husband-to-be was working as a photoengraver at the time, and it was the photographs for Mademoiselle that first brought them into contact.   Always a lover of books she subsequently worked at Longmans Green Publishers in New York as a first reader in the Children’s Book Department.
When her husband’s job brought the family to Maryland in 1972 Mrs. Gibson worked as a freelance writer and photographer and sold numerous articles and photographs to educational and religious magazines and the Journal Newspapers.   She was a member of the National League of American Pen Women and twice president of the Alexandria, Virginia chapter.  She was a charter member and librarian of the Church of the Saviour in Rohrersville, Maryland.
She is survived by two sons, Colin James Gibson of Los Angeles, California and Peter Christopher Gibson of Boonsboro Maryland, a daughter and son-in-law Janet Gibson Boswell and Reid Thomas Boswell of Winchester, Massachusetts, three grandchildren, Sofia June Boswell, Theodor Vladimir Boswell and Alexander Seminov Boswell, a grand-niece Bridget Dennis Stone, her husband Nigel Stone and their sons Aaron, David and Joshua who live in Braddock Heights, Maryland.   Other survivors include her first cousin Hazel Smith (neé Bedell) and her family of Salisbury Maryland as well as nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews in England, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia and cousins in Finland.   In addition to her husband Ronald Mrs. Gibson was preceded in death by her husband’s brothers and sisters-in-law Edward and Lucille Gibson of Frederick Maryland and James and Iris Gibson of Ladiesburg Maryland.
Her memorial service will be held at the Church of the Saviour, 4325 Main Street, Rohrersville, Maryland 21779 (301) 665-9600 on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. with a reception to follow.   In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made either to the Facilities Fund of the Church of the Saviour at the above address; Cook Communications Ministries International (formerly Bible Literature International) 4050 Lee Vance Drive, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80918; or Central Maryland Youth for Christ, 7899 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, Maryland 21702.
